Music Styles

The list below details the intermediate to advanced phase of guitar work. Note that any beginning guitar lesson will always start off with learning the most important elements of music such as chords, rhythm, timing and other necessary concepts.

Acoustic - Acoustic guitar lessons involve learning techniques, chords and rhythms that are best suited for an acoustic guitar. Many acoustic guitarists employ a variety of open chords since barre chords are possible but very dificult on acoustics. Because of their construction, acoustic guitars are harder to play on than electric guitars, thus making them a sort of "hand trainer".

Blues - Blues guitar lessons incorporate knowledge of 12 bar blues, pentatonics, improvisational (improv) and lead soloing. Learning blues guitar is one of the most beneficial things a musician can study since it is one of the most popular genres. Nearly every other style on this list has some influence of blues in it.

Classic Rock - Classic rock guitar lessons involve focusing on rhythm techniques,

Country - Country guitar lessons use many of the same ideas and concepts known in blues since these are related music genres. Country music tends to focus more on open chords, but still makes use of 12 bar blues patterns.

Electric - Electric guitar lessons involve learning techiniques specific to the electric guitar such as whammy bar usage, volume swells and others.

Fingerstyle - Fingerstyle guitar lessons entail learning to using your fingers to pick the strings and. Guitarists such as Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac use fingerstyle to great effect.

Folk and Traditional - Folk and traditional guitar lessons are closely related to country.

Heavy Metal - Heavy Metal guitar is a very challenging field as it requires expert guitar work. Heavy metal guitarists often employ dazzling techniques and fast guitar riffage in their songs. Also, many heavy metal bands down tune their instruments making it dificult to replicate what they do on a standard tunded guitar.

Jazz - To learn jazz guitar typically requires the knowledge of hundreds of chords, and most importantly chord structure and progressions. Jazz guitar is a very music theory intense field which requires dedication and patience since even modest jazz guitar can be considered intermediate or advanced in level.

Modern Rock and Pop - Rock guitar lessons and pop guitar involve learning many of today's songs

Solo and Lead Guitar - Solo and lead guitar are often considered the pinnacle of a guitarists ability. Soloing requires a great deal of technical ability and music theory knowledge and can be applied to any genre. Lead guitar also involves creating your own distinct riffs and licks making it perfect for creative people.

Songwriting - Songwriting is a very creative art form making it best suited to creative type people who don't mind experimenting with ideas, or trying new things. Composition does have applicable music theory, but often most songwriters tend to "get creative" and bend the rules.

Shred Guitar - The art of shredding is common to virtuoistic styles of players and involves playing at incredible speeds of up to 20 notes per second. Commonly known shredders would be Eddie Van Halen or Joe Satriani. Speed is by far one of the hardest abilities to develop as it takes months and sometimes years to garner incredibly fast techiniques.
