The list below details the intermediate to advanced phase of guitar work. Note that any beginning guitar lesson will always start off with learning the most important elements of music such as chords, rhythm, timing and other necessary concepts.
Acoustic - Acoustic guitar lessons involve
learning techniques, chords and rhythms that are best suited for an acoustic
guitar. Many acoustic guitarists employ a variety of open chords since barre
chords are possible but very dificult on acoustics. Because of their construction,
acoustic guitars are harder to play on than electric guitars, thus making
them a sort of "hand trainer".
Blues - Blues guitar lessons incorporate knowledge of 12
bar blues, pentatonics, improvisational (improv) and lead soloing. Learning
blues guitar is one of the most beneficial things a musician can study since
it is one of the most popular genres. Nearly every other style on this list
has some influence of blues in it.
Classic Rock - Classic rock guitar lessons involve focusing
on rhythm techniques,
Country - Country guitar lessons use many of the same ideas
and concepts known in blues since these are related music genres. Country
music tends to focus more on open chords, but still makes use of 12 bar
blues patterns.
Electric - Electric guitar lessons involve learning techiniques
specific to the electric guitar such as whammy bar usage, volume swells
and others.
Fingerstyle - Fingerstyle guitar lessons entail learning
to using your fingers to pick the strings and. Guitarists such as Lindsey
Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac use fingerstyle to great effect.
Folk and Traditional - Folk and traditional guitar lessons
are closely related to country.
Heavy Metal - Heavy Metal guitar is a very challenging
field as it requires expert guitar work. Heavy metal guitarists often employ
dazzling techniques and fast guitar riffage in their songs. Also, many heavy
metal bands down tune their instruments making it dificult to replicate
what they do on a standard tunded guitar.
Jazz - To learn jazz guitar typically requires the knowledge
of hundreds of chords, and most importantly chord structure and progressions.
Jazz guitar is a very music theory intense field which requires dedication
and patience since even modest jazz guitar can be considered intermediate
or advanced in level.
Modern Rock and Pop - Rock guitar lessons and pop guitar
involve learning many of today's songs
Solo and Lead Guitar - Solo and lead guitar are often considered
the pinnacle of a guitarists ability. Soloing requires a great deal of technical
ability and music theory knowledge and can be applied to any genre. Lead
guitar also involves creating your own distinct riffs and licks making it
perfect for creative people.
Songwriting - Songwriting is a very creative
art form making it best suited to creative type people who don't mind experimenting
with ideas, or trying new things. Composition does have applicable music
theory, but often most songwriters tend to "get creative" and bend the rules.
Shred Guitar - The art of shredding is common to virtuoistic
styles of players and involves playing at incredible speeds of up to 20
notes per second. Commonly known shredders would be Eddie Van Halen or Joe
Satriani. Speed is by far one of the hardest abilities to develop as it
takes months and sometimes years to garner incredibly fast techiniques.
