So I just bought the Spider Capo a couple of nights ago, and it's a pretty interesting toy. I say toy, because I don't really think it's' a necessary tool that everyone needs to have in their toolbox, but it's kind of like a slide or an E-bow for a rock guitarist. You'll rarely use it, but you'll have a ton of fun when you do.

The Spider Capo is a completely different type of capo, allowing you to capo only specific strings. As an example, you could choose to capo only the 2nd and 4th strings at the third fret. This kind of flexibility in a capo is pretty neat because, although they tout the sting skipping capoing ability of it, you can also use it as a full capo, and a cut (half) capo in a pinch. It doesn't have as much tonal accuracy that way, but still very possible.

To make it work you adjust each finger to hold down whichever string you want. You do however have to adjust them vertically as well to compensate for different fretboard widths. It's a snap to setup, and I figured out how to use it without even look at the directions.

The Spider Capo does allow you to do some interesting tonal things on your guitar, including playing BEHIND the capo, but once again, it's more of an experimenter's toy - not really great for those who haven't already done a little songwriting and experimenting. I think the Spider Capo will help you enhance your experimentation, but if you're not a generally creative person, you might have a hard time figuring out what to do with the Spider Capo.

The Spider Capo did happen to win "Best In Show" from the Summer NAMM 2009 Show which was really the deal clincher for me.
