So for those of you who don't know, the Tascam DR-07 is a portable field recorder capable of capturing audio from a unit a little taller and thicker than a cell phone.

The Tascam DR07 is a great a unit that does exactly what it should at an economical price. Some of the things I loved about the DR-07 is the fact it can record to .wav, or .mp3, and you can choose the quality of the file (128kbps, 192kbps, etc.) It comes with wind sock and a 2 GB SD card which is nice, and can hold an 8 GB SD card.

The wind sock tended to fall off to easily, so it would've been nice if they manufactured one with an elastic rim at the base of the sock to squeeze onto the unit, but I got around this by rubber-banding it on.

It was nice to actually have an SD card worth my while (anyone sick of buying a toy that comes with a free *cough* worthless *cough* 256Mb card?) but the only problem (and I've experienced this myself) is Tascam stuff tends to format any non-Tascam card. Thus, if you insert your own 4 GB card, you might pull it out only to have your computer recognize it as a 1 GB. Ouch.

Realistically, even at it's best settings you probably won't be pushing the limits of the card unless you're trying to capture an entire concert's worth of recording.

The product had a lot of handling noise, so when you find a comfy spot, leave it there.

Oh.. There is a screw on spot for a camera stand (what's that called by the way?), but they don't sell it with one. It would have been nice if they sold it with one, since you can't really hold it because of the handling noise, and setting it down on it's side or back just seems crude.

This particular portable digital recorder does allow you to adjust the input volume (in case you're recording your live band), as well as output level. There is a line out and a mic in spot that are both in 1/8" jacks.

Hooking the Tascam DR-07 up to the computer is a total cinch, with no fancy software. Just simply plug it in via the mini USB port, and drag and drop your audio.

The Tascam is very easy to use, and I would rate it a 10 for as such. If you're looking for a mid-priced field recorder that's tough, easy to use, and has plenty of options, then you're looking for the Tascam DR-07.
